Big Turnout For Swan Lake Meeting

Apr 17, 2018 | 11:49 AM

An open house on the Swan Lake Commercial Area and Neighbourhood Plan drew a larger than expected crowd.

An estimated 200 people took in the input session at the Vernon Christian Secondary School Monday night.

It was hosted by the Regional District of North Okanagan to get feedback on issues such as a community sewer, future growth areas, and housing density, as part of updating the Official Community Plan for Electoral Areas B and C.

RDNO chair and Area B director, Bob Fleming, says most people were interested in the possibility of a community sewer.

“The people running it, both the people we’ve hired from Urban Systems plus our own staff, have to now go through all that information, but from general comments, the interest was strong, and I think the support is generally strong for the idea, at least, of a community sewer,” Fleming told Beach Radio News.

Fleming says input was also gathered on plans for commercial and industrial development on the east side of the highway.

“Most of it is zoned commercial or industrial, so then it’s just a question of what kind….There is all kinds of different possibilities, whether that’s anything from the big box retailers, to the service commercial, to accommodation, or those kinds of things. So some things may be more appropriate than others. We’re wanting to hear from people what they think,” adds Fleming.

Fleming says staff will now compile the input and render it into “an understandable form.”

“We have to see where the different concerns and supports are, and what people’s ideas were.”

He says a second meeting will be held in early June when a proposal for the area’s planning will be presented.
