Vernon Schools Budget Needs Public Input

Apr 12, 2018 | 10:44 AM

Vernon School trustees will spend the next week looking at a Draft Budget Adjustment Plan for the next school year.

The current budget plan projects a deficit of 430 thousand dollars.

School Board Chair Kelly Smith says staff have made a number of recommendations.

“You know how budgets work. You put one thing in, you gotta take something else out. We need input from the public so they can look at this list. It will be explained to them what staff is recommending.”

Smith says after years of cuts, bringing things back is hard

“Well you’ve got to choose now. There are so many things that have been cut over those 12 years. So it’s hard to choose which ones will make the most positive impact in the classroom. Which ones to bring back in.”

Teachers have made recommendations based primarily on the needs of students.

Smith agrees, and says funding needs to be directed that way.

“We need to get funding back into the classroom for the kids. So, it has to be as close to the students as possible.”

The public is asked to look at staff recommendations on the school board website.

A public meeting is also going to be held next Wednesday, April 18th at Kalamalka Secondary school for input.
