All Clear On Eastside Road After Mudslide

Eastside Road in Okanagan landing is back to normal this morning after yesterday’s mudslide.

City Public Works Manager James Rice says it was a full day of work to clear the area and get power restored.

“City crews and contractors working for BC Hydro worked until about 10 pm last night. I believe power was restored about 9 pm and the road was opened shortly after. So full traffic on Eastside Road and power has been restored.”

A geo- technical engineer will be back at the site this morning just to do another check on the slope to ensure it’s stable.

“He’s likely going to finalize a report for us and will have some additional information later today which we will be providing.”

It’s believed the slide was caused by saturated ground due to snow melt.

But the city feels the area is safe.

“What we’re looking for from the geo-tech is a little more detail on why it occurred. Even though we think we’ve got a pretty good understanding from the information he provided, we just want to formalize that.”

From that, the city will be able to determine if any permanent repairs will be made at that site.

The city is keeping an eye on the region as the snow melt continues.

“Both Eastside and Tronson Road historically, you know this time of year, you do see the water issues and embankment seeping, so we are continually looking at those areas for potential failures.”

A couple of vehicles and a home were damaged when the debris swept over a retaining wall.

No one was injured.
