Update: Math Mavens At BC Event

Apr 11, 2018 | 9:00 AM

The Math Challengers Competition at UBC in Vancouver was a learning and inspiring experience for some Vernon students.

Six students from Clarence Fulton Secondary took part in the provincial event.

“They tried their best, represented Fulton excellently and improved their team score significantly from the regional round,” says Maritza Reilly
Executive Assistant/Communications Coordinator with School District 22.  “This is a testament to all of the hard work and effort that they put in to prepare for this event. The competition was definitely a few steps up from what they saw at the regional round but it was very motivating for them to see so many other keen, talented and passionate math minds from around the province. The students are already talking about next year!”

A group of Fulton Secondary math students are off to Vancouver to see how they fare against others from around BC.

A provincial competition will be held at UBC Saturday, with team and individual competitions.

Grade 8 student Bremyn Upsdell-Reddekopp qualified for the individual competition, while five grade 9 Fulton students are in the team event: Buder Hayat, Goldspring Ha, Talisa Lutz, Hanna Toporchak, and Braden Bird.

Math Challengers is an enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes mathematics achievement among students in Grades 8, 9 and 10 by challenging students with stimulating and thought-provoking questions, and having school math teams compete with each other at local, regional and provincial tournaments.

“We have such a great group of students,” says Ryan Thompson, Fulton teacher. “They are working on math problems that are well beyond the grade 8 and 9 curriculum. Also the support they have shown for one another and how well they work as a team to solve these problem – they should be proud of themselves to be included in this group of students from around the province.”

The students will participate in two individual contest rounds, then in a team round, and finally the top ranked students take part in a head to head buzz-in question-and- answer session (similar to the TV quiz show, “Jeopardy”), where the overall individual champion is decided.

Trophies and awards are given to the top finishers.

The Fulton Math Team would like to thank the following sponsors who helped fund the expenses for their trip to Vancouver: KPMG, Century 21 Executives – Bill Hubbard, Heidi Lussi – RE/MAX Vernon,Sladen Moore, Chartered Professional Accountants, and C-Floor.
