Social Group Welcomes More Affordable Housing

Apr 9, 2018 | 6:51 AM

The Social Planning Council has spearheaded much of the recent new affordable housing projects in Vernon — but not all of them.

The Vancouver Resource Society is behind the recently announced rental projects on 37th Street and 27th Avenue.

Annette Sharkey from the Planning Council says they have no problem working with the society.

“In Vernon, we’re extremely welcoming and very collaborate. And if this means we get new units in the community, we’re more than willing to work with another non profit.”

The province is providing 23 million dollars to buy three properties and develop a new apartment building.

Vernon council will consider final rezoning approval today to allow an affordable housing project in the 4-thousand block of Pleasant Valley Road.

Sharkey says a public hearing has been held on the plan.

“Neighbors did come out. They had some concerns around some of the trees. I guess there’s a really old tree on the property but it’s up in the back and it’s going to be safe. But the neighbors seem to be really welcoming, and we’re looking forward to working with them.”

Sharkey says the development would be tailored to moderate income earners such as families and people with disabilities.
