Enderby Looks For Landfill Assurances In Solid Waste Management Plan

The City of Enderby is concerned about one part of the regional district’s draft Solid Waste Management Plan.

It calls for closure of the Armstrong landfill in the mid 2020’s.

Enderby Mayor Greg McCune says that will leave people at the north end of the valley with just household pickup or a long drive to the Vernon landfill.

“You know, at the end of the day is that good value having another, you know, 300 cars a week on the road driving and wear and tear on the highways, emissions etc etc.”

There is the possibility of a transfer station.

McCune says from a business standpoint, he wonders if that would be large enough.

“Cause every supplier sends you constantly amounts of fun stuff that helps sell their products. So, you use some, some you don’t. We have, twice a year we have two to three pickup loads of stuff.”

McCune says if the public and businesses have to travel to the Vernon landfill, that could be too onerous.

“Let’s say people have a bunch of waste that they have that they’re like oh I used to just to take it to Armstrong. Now I gotta drive it to the other side of Vernon. Yeah, I’m just going to take it up the back road of Enderby and just chuck it out. So, we want to make sure that that doesn’t happen.

McCune says Enderby’s concerns will be passed on to the regional district.

He says he thinks the regional district’s overall plan for reducing waste and increasing reuse initiatives is good.
