More Nominators Needed For Council Run

Apr 9, 2018 | 6:41 PM

Candidates seeking a seat on Vernon council this fall will have to get a bit more support.

When they file their papers, candidates for mayor or councillor will have to have ten nominators — up from the current two.

Councillor Juliette Cunningham says it’s a good change.

“If you can’t get ten people to nominate you, you probably shouldn’t spend your time trying to be elected,” says Cunningham.

All of the nominators must be City of Vernon residents.

Mayor Akbal Mund says it brings it in line with some other communities.

“It makes sense. I would like to see 50 on there to be honest, because if you can’t get 50 endorsements, why are you running?” says Mund.

Kelowna candidates need 25 nominators while in Kamloops, it’s ten.

“Ten is a reasonable number,” adds Cunningham.

Municipal elections in BC will be held Oct. 20th.
