Carnival Facing Eviction From Office

The Vernon Winter Carnival Society is concerned it could soon be without a home.

Chair Deb White was before city council today asking for help after getting notice they have to be out of their current building on 35th Avenue, which is owned by the City of Vernon, within six months.

“Carnival’s board of directors understands your decision and has been searching for a new location. However, we are a non profit society run by volunteers and on a very tight budget,” said White.

White says they’re asking the city for assistance in finding another site, or to stay in their current location until they find something else.

Council will discuss the request at its next meeting.

Mayor Akbal Mund says the building has had issues with flooding, is no longer safe, and they want to tear it down.

“The City will work with them to see if we can come up with some where. I know we don’t have a lot of properties available, but we’ll see what we can work out because Winter Carnival is an important event,” Mund tells CJIB News.

White says the society has been in the building since 1995.

“To run carnival, I believe overall it costs about $176,000 to put on, and as a profit for us in 2015, we were in the negative. Now we’re slowing climbing out. So for us to find new accommodation, we just don’t have the money to do it, and we want to keep carnival running,” added White.

Winter Carnival has been running since 1961.
