MPs Say Liberals Weak On Mussels

Mar 22, 2018 | 7:46 AM

Two Tory MP’s from the Okanagan accuse the Trudeau government of dragging its feet on providing funding to prevent zebra and quagga mussels in BC waters.

Mel Arnold (North Okanagan-Shuswap) and Dan Albas (Central Okanagan-Similkameen-Nicola) say federal fisheries minister Dominic LeBlanc earlier promised new resources, but this week he said they haven’t allocated the funding for this year.

The MP’s wonder why the Okanagan is being denied assistance, while other regions of the country receive tens of millions of dollars in support.

Arnold says the Liberals have to take the issue seriously.

“An introduction of zebra or quagga mussels or other invasive species to our region would have devastating consequences and yet this government continues to drag its feet in providing resources to fight invasive species,” says Arnold. “There are proven preventative measures available and we will continue to use every opportunity we have to win federal support for aquatic invasive species prevention in BC.
