Vernon Legion Elects New Executive

Mar 21, 2018 | 9:48 AM

It appears the future of the Royal Canadian Legion in Vernon is secure.

After weeks of worry the Legion would have to shut down because no one was stepping up to be on the executive, that all changed at last night’s meeting.

Current President Bill Balcaen says members showed up and signed up.

“This is wonderful. The last thing I wanted to see was this legion close down because we are significant in the community. We enjoy working in the community. It was just there wasn’t enough people had stepped forward.”

Balcaen says in recent days, he’s been hearing from people wondering what was happening as the deadline approached.

“Sometimes I guess it takes a shock to make people realize it can’t go on without participation.”

Balcaen says members coming into the office in recent days were expressing their concern about the annual poppy campaign and the annual Remembrance Day event at Kal Tire Place.

More than 20 people showed up to last night’s meeting to ensure an execurtive could be elected.

“Some are new members, but mostly, the majority was members that have been not on the sidelines, not real active but I think everyone understands the consequences.”

The names of the new executive won’t be announced until confirmed by the Legion Command in Vancouver.
