Drug Paraphernalia Found as Snow Melts

Mar 21, 2018 | 1:00 PM

The coordinator of Vernon’s Community Safety Office says reports of discarded needles being found are not new for the city.

Coordinator Rachael Zubick says it happens every year once the snow melts.

“One of the things is that we know during a thaw, as soon as everything starts receding, we’re going to see a lot of debris which will include drug paraphernalia. So we suggest means and ways of people disposing it in a healthy and proper manner.”

She says any found needles can be brought to the Community Safety Office for safe disposal.

“You should put on something to protect your hands. Put it in a puncture proof container, like a Gatorade bottle or something that has a lid, and you can certainly drop it off at the Community Safety Office (at 3010 31st Ave by Cenotaph Park).”

Zubick says their office would normally get phone calls about discarded needles, but this year, the reports are being made on social media.

She more people are posting pictures on social media to allow for discussions on issues like this.
