Council Cuts Committee Meetings

Mar 15, 2018 | 5:32 PM

Armstrong Council will hold a special meeting Friday to adopt a procedural bylaw changing the way council operates.

Mayor Chris Pieper says afternoon committee meetings will be dissolved.

“And forming a committee of the whole. And we usually have our committee meetings starting at one o’clock or 1:15 and then go through the afternoon. We have staff there to present, and then in the evening meeting, we go through the whole thing again.”

Those committee meetings have taken up a lot of time and paper.

“What that generates over the year are literally hundreds of different sets of minutes, both for the afternoon meeting and the evening meeting.”

The mayor hopes that will be more attractive to potential council candidates.

“So not starting council until 5:30 would allow anyone this fall that currently works on a day shift job to apply for a job as a councillor and it wouldn’t interfere with their work as much as it does right now.”

Pieper is particularly hopeful the change will attract younger people to consider running for council.

Once adopted Friday, the change will take effect for the next council day March 26th.
