Food Service Upgrade For Kal Beach

Mar 14, 2018 | 7:09 AM

People using Kal Beach this summer should have new options for food service.

Mayor Jim Garlick says now that Coldstream has taken over care and control of the beach from the regional district, some changes are coming.

“We put out a Request For Proposals for the food kiosk there, and we’re also allowing for a proposal for a mobile vendor to be on site.”

He’s not ruling out more than one vendor down the road.

“Rather than have a designated building for food, it might be smarter to move to some sort of pads where mobile vendors could hook up to services on and provide their wares from there.”

Traditionally, the concession has served ice cream, drinks, candy, and an assortment of deep fried foods.

Further changes to food services would be put to the public.

“This would be a conversation that we need to have with the public moving forward in the planning process. Like I say, having one this year is a start and we’ll go from there.”

The contract the regional district had with the operator of the concession ended in 2017.

Staff have recommended that a mobile vendor could set up in the road right of way between the concession and the washroom facility.
