Armstrong Prepares for Flooding

Mar 14, 2018 | 7:18 AM

Armstrong Mayor Chris Pieper hopes to be able get started soon on flood mitigation for Meighan Creek.

The city received a grant to do some dredging and work on the creek’s banks and needed 100 per cent approval of people living along the creek.

Pieper says so far about 98 per cent have given a thumbs up

“But there are some that are within a hundred metres that want to discuss things, but basically we’ve had a real solid response from all of the homeowners to solve the problem with the flooding or help solve it.”

The Mayor says it’s just a matter now of crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s and work should be underway shortly.

With word last week the Okanagan Snowpack is already at where it was at the end of last April, Armstrong has decided get ready now to shore up its defences if a flood threat shows up.

“The city has ordered sandbags. The city has sandbags and we’ve got a sandbag station set up right now. Hopefully, we don’t have to use it but if we do, we are ready.”

The sandbag station is next to the public works yard.

Mayor Pieper says the city has a responsibility to be prepared.

” We have to. We have to do our due diligence. The dredging might not be the end all either. We can’t control mother nature.”

Pieper says anyone who wants to come down to the sand bag station and fill bags is welcome to.
