Water Rate Break Suggested For Supportive Housing Projects

Mar 12, 2018 | 7:14 AM

Supportive housing projects in Vernon could get a break on their water rates to make them more cost effective.

Greater Vernon Advisory Director Bob Spiers says four Class 3 projects — with a total of 81 units — are being considered.

“All these projects that are in the Class 3 are approved by the province of BC at a cabinet level each and every year,” says Spiers.

Spiers says they are looking at charging the developments just one base water fee, instead of one for each unit.

Spiers says the former Journey Inn on 28th Avenue, which is now run by the John Howard Society, is one example.

“They have 38 units. Before as a hotel, they would be charged one base fee, but now as supportive housing, they were being charged 38 base fees, and at 90 bucks a quarter, that’s a heck of a lot of money,” adds Spiers.

Greater Vernon Water staff says the change would result in a loss of 28-thousand dollars of revenue.
