Fortis Seeks Landfill Gas From RDNO

Mar 12, 2018 | 7:26 AM

The Regional District of North Okanagan and Fortis have been talking about landfill gas.

RDNO Board Chair Bob Fleming says Fortis hopes to capture gas that is created from decomposing material.

Currently, that gas is flared off.

“The idea is that they capture it, clean it and put it back into their distribution system and then they sell recycled gas, so in other words it completes the loop.”

The Board has agreed to look into the project further with Fortis.

” All the significant gases are being captured and reused. They’re look at it as a very green energy project. It’s a way to take out mined gas and replace it with recycled gas.”

Fortis has a project on the coast where compressed gas captured from landfills is used to
power vehicles that collect organic waste.

The company already works with Salmon Arm  at it’s landfill and it  brings a cost benefit to the regional district.

“They were talking about between a dollar and a dollar-fifty a gigajoule. In the case of salmon Arm, it’s not huge, but they’re getting about a thousand dollars and change a month. Ours is at least twice the volume.”

A feasibility study would have to be conducted.

It could be several months before a final decision is made.

The plan would also have to go to the BC Utilities Commission for approval
