Dog Bylaw Gets Closer Look

Mar 12, 2018 | 5:29 PM

Staff with the Regional District of North Okanagan have been directed to take another look at the region’s Dog Control Bylaw.

This comes after a letter to the District suggesting that the bylaw be amended to include leashing restrictions on dogs even in an off-leash area.

Board Chair Bob Fleming says it’s a little unclear about whether there`s a problem.

“The question was raised, like dogs off-leash. We’ve got off-leash areas in parks. We`re not going to say that you have to have your dog on a leash in an off-leash park. That kind of defeats the purpose.”

Fleming says it may just be a language change to the current bylaw.

“Under the section 14, it does indicate that a person must be in control of their dog and they must be big enough, you know strong enough to control their dog. There is a requirement for controlling your dog. It doesn’t specifically say that you must have it on a leash.”

It was recommended the bylaw be amended to include a requirement for the leashed dog to be under the control of an individual that is capable of managing the dog, not a child.
