Search On For Multicultural Community Champions

Mar 7, 2018 | 12:36 PM

Residents are being asked to submit their nominations for the third annual Multicultural Community Champions

The program  — led by the North Okanagan Social Planning Council and funded by the province — celebrates multiculturalism and shows how diversity strengthens the community.

Executive director Annette Sharkey says they are looking for nominees that have a diverse cultural background, and contribute back to the  community through entrepreneurship, career, stewardship, mentorship, or volunteerism.

Up to 10 nominations will be selected at Community Champions who will have their story professionally written and shared in the community. They will also be honoured at a reception in June and receive a keepsake copy of their feature story.

“Our community is rich with people from indigenous cultures as well as people from around the world contributing to the fabric of our society. We’ve had such a positive response to the stories that have been running monthly in the Vernon Morning Star and we want to continue the program and keep inspiring local residents,” says Sharkey.

The nomination process involves completing a simple form and submitting it to the Social Planning before March 31st, 2018. The forms are available to download online at http://www.socialplanning.ca/nom.html

“Under the banner “Respect Works Here” these stories inspire and captivate readers. Respect comes from understanding each other better and this simple initiative shows the strength our community gains from embracing and celebrating diversity,” adds Sharkey.
