Lumby Mayor Still Waiting On RDNO Response

Mar 7, 2018 | 7:23 AM

The Mayor of Lumby still hasn’t heard back officially from the regional district on a request to release more water from Aberdeen Plateau reservoirs to help prevent spring flooding.

The RDNO told CJIB news last week it has no intention of releasing any more water than it already is.

Kevin Acton would like to have had a response.

“Well you know, I haven’t had that in writing. And that’s not what I heard them say. We’re still waiting for that conversation and like you say, time is getting close.”

Temperatures are rising through the rest of the week.

Acton hopes for a slow melt and no rain to ease any potential flooding

“The melt starts early and we get hot, dry winds and evaporation and no rain with the snow melt we’ll get what we get. But if that perfect storm comes along and we get it all at the same time, that’s when we have issues.”

The regional district says it has to take into consideration what is available down the line for the region as a whole.

“The Greater Vernon Water District built those reservoirs to make sure they retained enough water for the use of Vernon during the summers and taking risks of not getting them full leaves them with the chance of having some water shortages.”

Acton says there has been precedent set where if you’re going to control water you are responsible for the downstream effect.

He hopes to have a discussion with district officials this week.
