100 Kids Who Care In Vernon

Mar 7, 2018 | 12:00 PM

Vernon now has it’s “100 Kids Who Care” group raising money for local charities.

So far 40 youth aged 5 to 17 have joined to try to make a difference.

One of the organizers, Kerry McLeod, says they choose smaller registered non-profits.

“They have to be in the North Okanagan and ideally not something like the Cancer Society or Heart and Stroke that has professional fundraisers all the time. We’re trying to help the smaller groups will benefit from a couple of hundred dollars here and there.”

The first charities being helped are the Vernon Learning Disabilities Association, Girls Club Speak, and the Vernon Animal Care Society.

The kids are asked to donate 10 dollars of their own money four times a year.

For those who have trouble raising money, they can go to what’s called the I Can App.

“We post challenges all the time. Like give ten high fives, do a random act of kindness, or pick up garbage. When they do those challenges, each time they earn 25 cents.”

The kids themselves decide how much to give to each charity.

So far, each group is getting around 100 dollars, but not all donations are in yet.

McLeod says as the group evolves, some of the older kids are showing interest in taking leadership roles.

The group has a Facebook page and is working to increase membership by its next meeting in June or July.
