Transit Adds More Routes and Options

Mar 6, 2018 | 4:48 PM

BC Transit has announced expanded bus service and new fares for the Vernon Regional Transit System starting April 1st.

Among the improvements is a new high frequency route providing direct service from downtown to the north end, seven days a week.

Saturday service will be added on route 90, the UBCO Connector.

Service on four routes will be extended to 9 at night weekdays on routes 3 Alexis Park, 5 South Vernon, 7 OK Landing and 8 Bella Vista.

Transit’s Manager of Planning Matthew Boyd says the increased service is what the public wanted.

“What this really equates to is over 8,000 hours of extra service, which is really a 25 percent increase for the transit system for the North Okanagan, which is fantastic growth, and I’m sure it’s going to encourage more ridership.”

As part of the changes, all one way fares will be 2 dollars 50 cents starting April 1st, while the UBCO connector fare will be 5 dollars.

City of Vernon’s Transportation Manager Amanda Watson says they’ve gone from having 14 different fare products, to basically one.

“We’ve removed the zone boundary, through agreement with our partners, and we now have a unified fare system, so there is now just one fare product,” says Watson.
