Mayor Supports Smaller Board

Mar 6, 2018 | 3:29 PM

Enderby’s mayor is satisfied with the decision to reduce the size of an elected North Okanagan-Shuswap School Board to five trustees.

Greg McCune calls it a wise move and says more isn’t always better anymore.

“You know, Mr. McKay (official trustee for District 83) proved that he could do it himself by being ridiculously prepared and understanding the region, and what each community’s schools needed. I think he set the bar.”

McCune says he felt the previous board didn’t consider the District fully.

“Before when it was fragmented in larger chunks, everybody tended to, in my opinion,  spend a lot of time in their local area, but not look at the district itself.”

McCune says he thinks the shift is going to be very successful and he’s satisfied with one trustee for Enderby.

He hopes candidates for this fall’s election take the right approach.

“You know, you’re representing absolutely every citizen in your community. And I think for a trustee, it’s got to be every child and every parent in the whole region is probably your best approach, and if you can do that, you’ll be successful.”

McCune advises against allowing peer pressure that make things complicated.
