Roger Bannister Dies at 88

Roger Bannister…everybody knew the name whether a runner or not…he was one of the world’s fastest runners, has died at the age of 88 in Oxford, England.

He was the first to break the four-minute barrier in the mile.

It happened May 6th, 1954, Bannister set the record running four laps on a cinder track in Oxford…his time 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds.

For his accomplishment Bannister was chosen as Sports Illustrated’s very first Sportsman of the Year in 1954.
