Vernon council has given approval to preliminary designs for two parks on Okanagan Lake.

One is Hurlburt Park on Eastside Road, and the other is Lakeshore Park on Lakeshore Road.

“We (council) had some discussion on both, and they’re going to proceed with those designs. It’s important to get these lots (City purchased a number of properties on Lakeshore Drive over the years for the park). The lakeshore has been sitting empty for years, so let’s make a decision and move forward,” says Mayor Akbal Mund.

Council has approved preliminary design plans to upgrade about 100 metres of Lakeshore Park.

That first phase will include adding a parking lot, swings, picnic tables, benches and signage.

Mund says Vernon has taken over operating Hurlburt Park which was purchased from Trinity United Church by the regional district in 2015.

Among the $719,000 in improvements will be adding a parking lot, driveway, a vault toilet, and buoys to define the swimming area.

“That park is used a lot, and we want to make sure it’s ready to go,” says the mayor.
