Owners Notified Of Flood Work

The City of Armstrong is preparing to do some flood mitigation along Meghan Creek.

Mayor Chris Pieper says because the work will be on private property, letters have gone out to about 75 property owners seeking their approval.

It’s hoped the maintenance work will help prevent a re-occurrence of last year’s flooding.

“We’re a little bit nervous and we’d like to have the work done by the end of March if possible if we can get the approvals from all the ministries but private property permission is one of the conditions.”

Several letters have already been returned approving of the work.

“Well, we would like to do some dredging if we can do it. There’s also some trees or shrubs growing in the middle of the creek, so some of that might be removed.”

Pieper says the city is working with various ministries to see what it is allowed to do because the creek is a riparian area.

“I don’t think it’s a long term project. I think a couple of weeks of active work around the creek would eliminate a majority of it.”

The cost of the work will be covered by the city’s public works capital fund.

The city has received a fairly substantial engineering grant from the provincial government for a total assessment of Meghan Creek and Deep Creek.

Pieper says it’s hoped that study will be done by this fall.

He says that should have a a long term strategy to protect property and look after the creek in an environmental way.
