Companies Have Say on Pesticide Ban

The owners of some Vernon pest management companies are concerned about a proposed pesticide ban in the City of Vernon.

The city has been asked to look into a possible ban by the Sustainable Environment Network Society, over health concerns about the chemicals.

Joel Campbell from Green Velvet Lawns, says their companies are already regulated, and careful with chemical use.

“As professionals, we use it (chemicals/pesticides) as a tool, so it’s not our go-to always to use. We use a lot of different aspects in dealing with pest problems, whether it be weeds, insects or disease,” Campbell told CJIB News

Campbell says even if there is a city ban imposed, people will still be able to buy the products, and many will not apply them correctly.

“And now you’re putting people that, say we’re currently servicing, into a situation where if they want to have a certain level of appearance to their property, they’re going to take it into their own hands, with minimal knowledge and understanding of what they’re doing.”

Campbell says his company could survive a ban, but might have to downsize their staff a bit.

“We can move forward, but we’ll be using tools that aren’t as effective. We will actually lose some tools in situations where there is really severe problems that now you can’t control.”

Henry van der Molen, president of Supergreen Lawn and Tree, was also part of the delegation that spoke to council.

City staff will be delivering a report on the ban request in April.
