Braving The Elements

Feb 22, 2018 | 5:25 PM

It’s hard to imagine sleeping outside during the current cold snap, but there has been some individuals doing that in Vernon.

Kelly Fehr, co-executive director of the local John Howard Society, says they do what they can to get as many people into the shelters as possible.

“We’re certainly aware there are some camps that are still up, or people that are sleeping outside, so we’re doing our best to continue to provide outreach,  and encourage people to come in.”

Fehr says beds at the Gateway and Howard House shelters have been full almost every night, along with 33 extreme weather mats.

The provincially-funded mats are scheduled to close at the end of March, but Fehr says that could be extended, if needed.

“We will continue to monitor the weather, and BC Housing will be open to dialogue if we need to keep them open.”
