RDNO Landfills See Revenue Boosts

The Regional District of North Okanagan has discovered its landfills have been busy.

While putting the 2018 budget being put together, the the district found the 2017 numbers show a dramatic increase in revenue at all the landfills.

Board Chair Bob Fleming says that generally relates to volumes being up.

“Part of that may be related to, well we don’t know exactly, but related to uh construction has been increasing and some of those things relate to construction waste and things flowing.”

Fleming says that’s resulted in an increase of about 11 per cent in revenues.

” On the bad side of course that means if we’re filling it faster that means the lifetime is shrinking so we have to, and there was conversations about initiatives to reduce, reduce waste going to the landfills.”

Fleming says members of the planning group in solid waste management will have to look at that and see how to respond.

“You know, removing things from the landfill. Removing waste. So we’re talking about compostable collection and stuff as part of that investigation going on right now so that doesn’t become part of the waste stream.”

Fleming notes some work is already underway at the Greater Vernon landfill including improvements and paving in areas that are not currently paved.

The work is designed to reduce the potential for leaching.

Storage pond and fire protection improvements are also underway.

The Greater Vernon landfill should have a lifespan to roughly 2050 but the district hopes to find ways to expand that.
