Arctic Air And Record Snow For Vernon

We’re still in the grip of a cold front that sent the temperature plummeting last night.

Wind chills were in the minus 28 range, but Environment Canada Meteorologist Lisa West says the regular temperature wasn’t low enough to set a record.

“In order to set a record for the 19th of February we would have had to get down to negative 25.5 and luckily we only got down to negative 21.5.”

It shouldn’t get quite as cold tonight with a low forecast of minus 19.

If you think you don’t remember it being cold like this in recent years, you’re right.

“No, I mean we’re looking at temperatures at least for the next couple of days here that are ranging from 8 to 15 degrees below normal.”

An arctic front has moved in and is expected to visit for pretty much the entire week.

“You’re mainly looking at dry conditions, cold temperatures. We’ve got some weak disturbances moving through the province which will bring a mix of sun and cloud on Tuesday and again on Wednesday.”

It looks like flurries for the weekend and highs around minus 2 or minus 3.

By next week we’ll get close to more seasonal ranges

“But, you know, really staying, even in the two week forecasting, a little bit below normal. So, we’re not quite out of winter yet.

As for Saturday’s snowfall, Vernon set a record for the day with 24.8 centimetres or snow, smashing the old record of 11.4 centimetres set in 1937.
