Vernon Mayor/Council Salaries Under Review

Feb 14, 2018 | 7:12 AM

A three person committee will review if Vernon’s mayor and councillors are being paid what they’re worth.

Former mayor Rob Sawatzky, along with Wee Yee and Glenn Benischek have been appointed by council to a remuneration committee

Mayor Akbal Mund says the review takes place in election years.

“I was asked by our CAO (chief administrative officer) to get a couple of members from the general public and a former elected official. The three people we have on there are well respected in the community,” Mund tells CJIB News.

Mund says the committee mandate will be fairly straight-forward:

“They will overlook and see what should be required. I can’t speculate what they will will talk about, but those three will be left in charge.”

In past reviews, the committee has looked at what council members in other similar sized communities are paid.

The mayor was paid just over 71-thousand dollars according to the latest figures from 2016.

Councilors received anywhere from 23 to 26-thousand dollars, depending on how many other political meetings they attended.
