Time to End ‘Schoolyard Squabble’

Feb 9, 2018 | 10:34 AM

BC’s opposition leader is blaming the province’s NDP government for what he feels is a fundamental attack on BC’s wine industry.

New Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson made a stop at a Kelowna winery Friday, to say Premier John Horgan has to “swallow his pride,” and solve what he calls a “schoolyard squabble.”

“The wine industry is now under siege, and wine workers are facing a challenge that is totally unnecessary that has been created by two NDP governments,” said Wilkinson who was crowned as the party’s new leader on Saturday.

Wilkinson says it’s unfortunate Horgan has chosen to pick a trade dispute with Alberta that will likely lead to a constitutional challenge that BC will probably lose.

“It’s high time for John Horgan to swallow his pride, show some leadership, get on a plane to Edmonton, and solve this problem so the BC wine industry can look forward to an even brighter future.

Wilkinson says Horgan is challenging an issue that is under federal jurisdiction.

“This puts a whole industry at risk. This is a major export market for BC wines that has been cut off and the people that will pay the price are workers in the BC wine industry, wine makers, vineyard operators, the suppliers of the industry which is now fundamental to the well being of the Okanagan,” added the Liberal leader, MLA for Vancouver-Quilchena.
