RDNO Rural Economic Proposal To Go Ahead

Jan 29, 2018 | 8:14 AM

The Regional District of North Okanagan still plans to go ahead with a Rural Economic Development Service even though Coldstream won’t be taking part.

RDNO Board Chair Bob Fleming says Electoral Areas B through F decided they would form a service regardless.

“The electoral areas felt  that it was worthwhile for ourselves in the rural areas to form this service and see if we had interest from other municipal partners, so that’s where we’re at right now.”

Coldstream felt it’s share of the cost was too much.

Fleming says that’s not enough to kill the plan.

“Uh no, we intend to, obviously it would be on a smaller scale and more directed, but that was the decision at the electoral areas level was that we kind of are the rural areas, obviously there’s rural communities as well.”

Other local council’s have yet to make a firm commitment and had expressed some concerns about their cost if Coldstream rejected the idea.

“The total cost would be adjusted downward because the scope of the project would be adjusted downward. So the requirement from the contractor would be smaller so you reduce the scale of the contract and move forward individually per each.”

The idea behind the project is to work with Community Futures on developing a strategy to take advantage of economic opportunities in the region.
