Premier Rejects ‘Frat Boy’ Culture

BC’s premier says his government is committed to gender equality.

John Horgan was reacting to comments from former premier Christy Clark who felt there’s been a “frat boy culture” in BC politics.

Horgan says 50% of his cabinet — and 46% of their caucus — are women.

“There is not a frat boy sentiment within our group. In the time I’ve been a member of the legislature, certainly there is an old boys culture to the institution, but I believe that’s been changing over the past number of years,” said Horgan from Seoul, South Korea while on a trade trip to Asian countries.

Horgan says the role of women will continue to prosper and grow in government, industry, and communities.

BC’s premier says the province is poised to benefit from this being the year of China-Canada tourism.

Horgan says more flights from China have been added into Vancouver, giving BC the opportunity to welcome more visitors from China, Korea and Japan.

“And that is a real potential opportunity for diversification, in particular for rural British Columbia. We want to get tourists out of Vancouver and Victoria and into the Cariboo, the Okanagan, and the Kootenays.”

Horgan says the relationship building is the key part of trips like this — adding he’s amazed at the magnitude of the amount of people and traffic in China.
