Vernon Budget 2018: Done Deal

Jan 25, 2018 | 9:53 AM

Vernon council has given final approval for its 2018 budget.

It features a tax hike of 5.05 percent, which Mayor Akbal Mund says includes 2.9 percent to hire six more police officers.

“No one has complained (about adding that many officers). It’s safety. Why would anybody complain? Not only for the police officers but for the fire services as well,” Mund tells CJIB News.

Support for the budget was unanimous on council.

Mund says Vernon is one of the earliest to get its budget done.

“Budgets should be done going into January because you’re spending the money  already, and when you start making your budget final at the end of April, you’ve already lost a third of your year, and now you’re deciding what you want to spend. It doesn’t make any sense.”

Municipalities have until May to finalize their budgets.

1.9 percent of the city budget is for an annual infrastructure levy.
