Safety Regulations Missed In O’Keefe Ranch Accident

Oct 20, 2017 | 10:09 AM

A WorkSafeBC Occupational Safety Officer outlines in a report the accident that injured O’Keefe Ranch Manager Glen Taylor.

The inspection report says an occupational health and safety regulation wasn’t met and the ranch never immediately informed WorkSafe of the accident.

Steven Marino says “Material was being transported by mobile equipment and it was not loaded or secured to prevent movement of the load which could create a hazard to workers.”

That material was a barrel that Taylor was transporting on a tractor last week when it became dislodged and struck him, leaving him with head and back injuries.

The report says the ranch made changes to comply with WorkSafe regulations to ensure a similar accident doesn’t occur.

The ranch has been ordered to submit a full investigation report into the accident to WorksafeBC within 30 days of the incident.

Taylor, who is also a councillor in Coldstream remains in hospital in Vancouver.

It’s estimated his recovery could take more than a year and could prevent him from attending council meetings during that time
