Quorum Concerns For Coldstream Council

Oct 20, 2017 | 6:33 AM

Coldstream council could be facing a shortage of members this winter.

Councillor Glen Taylor suffered serious injuries while working at the O’Keefe Ranch last week and could be recovering for over a year.

Mayor Jim Garlick says councillor Peter McLean may also not be available for meetings this winter, meaning they could be down to five members.

“I’ve heard Peter McLean is going away again this winter, so now if we have two councillors out, that affects how we operate, and I have to make sure no one else is going on extended holidays as well over the next while,”  Garlick tells Kiss FM.

Garlick says they would have a quorum with five members, but it makes it tougher.

“We expect to have seven. That’s why we have elections for seven people. You need to have that balance.”

Garlick says a by-election to fill Taylor’s spot isn’t likely.

“I would doubt that staff would recommended it for the costs and everything involved and the time left, so we’ll have to see.”

The next municipal elections are a year away in November 2018.
