Shuswap School Trustee Approves Surplus Expenditures

Oct 18, 2017 | 12:00 PM

North Okanagan-Shuswap official trustee Mike McKay has approved a spending plan for an unrestricted surplus from last year’s operating budget.

McKay is dividing approximately 360 thousand dollars into several areas.

One hundred thousand is going into helping staff work with the new curriculum.

“So there will be release time. There will be some people providing workshops. There will be staffs and small groups from staffs being able to sit together and work together to develop some of the materials and strategies that go with the new curriculum.”

The rest of the money is going to various areas including career development for students, numeracy and literary programs.

“We’ve got some programs that are really making a difference and we want to make sure we can enhance those and accelerate those when we can.
So when there’s an extra dollar on the table I’m happy to see it go to literacy and numeracy.”

Sixty thousand dollars will also go to a Pleasant Valley Secondary School initiative for support to vulnerable students.

The rest of the more than 1.2 million dollar surplus was already committed.

“If a school ordered something that didn’t come in until August, that would show on the books at the end of the year as surplus unexpended money but in fact it had been allocated and targeted and in several cases has already been used.
