Median Barriers For Hwy 97 North Out Of Vernon

Oct 16, 2017 | 6:13 AM

Median barriers are being installed on Highway 97 from 48th Avenue to Stickle Road over the next two weeks.

Highways District Manager Jack Bennetto says the work has nothing to do with the Stickle Road project.

“No, this will enhance the Stickle Road project, but it is not part. It’s working on the corridor of 97 through the Okanagan and it’s this area’s turn.”

Over the past couple of years, median barriers have been installed on the highway from Penticton right up to Vernon.

Bennetto says safety is the priority and everything has been done to ensure sight lines on sections like the overpass are properly dealt with.

“That’s part of when I speak to priorities we choose that based on sight distances primarily, so does the road curve or does the road go over vertically.”

There’s been some talk about the speed rating on that stretch of road but no changes are planned.

“We continually evaluate that with our engineers and volumes. It’s what I mentioned about sight distance and width of the road that makes those decisions on the speed. We don’t have any expectation of changing the speed at this point.”

Updates on the installation work will be posted on Drive BC until the work is completed at the end of the month
