May Be No Hope For Civic Arena

No final decisions have been made, but it looks like the Civic Arena could have a future date with the wrecking ball.

Vernon Mayor Akbal Mund says the City has been told by engineers, foundation problems will prevent the 80 year old building from being re-purposed.

“I’m all in favour of taking it down and doing what we have to do there. I’m not sure what could go there, but the building itself is not going to be usable,” Mund tells Kiss FM.

There has been talk of using the building for a farmers market or cultural facility once it’s decommissioned as an ice rink next fall.

“Sometimes it’s better not to spend the money of all kinds of consulting works to see if it needs to come down. I think we all know now it needs to come down,” adds Mund.

The plan is to stop using the Civic for ice events once the new arena at Kal Tire Place open in September 2018.

If it is torn down, there’s been talk of making that site into a park.

The mayor expects more talk about the arena during budget discussions this fall.

“This (decision on demolition) will obviously be left for the next council (elections are in Nov. 2018). We could make a decision, but you never know who sits on the next council and they could reverse the decision.”
