Grant Sought For Affordable Housing & Homeless

Oct 11, 2017 | 6:18 AM

Vernon’s Social Planning Council is seeking a 50-thousand dollar provincial grant to update its affordable housing and homeless strategies.

Executive director Annette Sharkey told city council, the strategies were launched in 2008 — and could use a refresh.

“But as we know, we are still in an affordable housing crisis, and and I know it’s getting a fair bit of attention. It is the biggest issue facing us right now,” says Sharkey.

Sharkey says the update will look at a variety of factors.

“We’ve talked about doing a refresh on these strategies, really taking a look at where we’ve had our successes, where we’re still having  challenges, and be able to take a look at best practices around the province.”

City council has given its support to the application, which could include in-kind and staff contributions.

“What I’m really looking for is what can we do immediately. Is there any actions that we haven’t taken that we could do right away? And then sort of intermediate and longer term,” adds Sharkey.
