Parking Improvements Planned For Kal Park

Oct 10, 2017 | 6:04 AM

Coldstream is trying to move forward with plans to improve parking at Kalamalka Provincial Park.

Mayor Jim Garlick says the priority is to build a bigger parking area at Red Gate and realign Kidston Road there.

“It’s a high use area and the parking there is minimal and it’s not the safest situation the way that cars enter and leave that area. And what we’re looking at is building a bigger parking area and the realignment of the road in that area.”

There would be an entrance into and out of the parking area at right angles to the road to make it safer for sight lines.

“The road would move in closer to that fenced area on the inside corner and then that would provide more space on the outside corner plus the land within the park. We’d be looking at the flat area where they have a sign in some spots now.”

Garlick figures that would probably double the parking there.

The other plan is to build a drive through loop at the Cosens Bay Road lot.

“What we’re thinking is actually parallel to the existing road. It would go into the parking lot as it is now and loop around closer to the mountainside. It would have to be in the park area and loop that down so we’d end up with two roads parallel to one another.”

Which would end up with one way traffic going in and out.

This would accommodate people with trailers for horses or bicycles.

Garlick hopes with the parks ministry’s approval  they can get started on this within the year.
