Stop Feeding Deer In Lumby

Jul 24, 2017 | 7:23 AM

Village Staff in Lumby have been asked to put together a bylaw about feeding deer.

“Our bylaw officer brought forward a sample bylaw, pretty simple from another community that has already dealt with it. We reviewed that and directed staff to go ahead and try and create a bylaw.”

It’s not a big problem, but Mayor Kevin Acton says there’s been the odd complaint.

“We want to make sure that we’re not attracting animals into the community where people are living. It’s not just the deer that come. With deer come the coyotes, the cougars, the wolves, the bears.”

He says people need to be aware that attracting wildlife into an urban area doesn’t work.

“We have a lot of wildlife in town already. Feeding them, leaving pet food out will just increase the issue.”

Staff could come back with a bylaw proposal sometime in August.”
