Defence Minister Likes Cadet Camp – Not So Much North Korea

The Vernon Army Cadet training camp is getting top marks from Canada’s Minister of national defence.

Harjit Sajjan recently toured the facility and met with cadets, of which 15-hundred are taking programs this summer.

Sajjan tells Kiss FM the facility prepares young people for adulthood and careers — and his government will continue to back it.

“I fully support it. It’s a facility that’s already well established and well known. It’s a good program and it’s connected well with the community, and we will be supporting it.”

The camp is in its 69th year of offering cadet courses, and is the third largest training centre in Canada.

He says some of the participants go into the military, but that’s not it’s only goal.

“It’s about preparing kids for adulthood and their careers. As I said to the cadets, you have unique leadership skills and a unique gift given to you, and what are you going to do with it?”

The world hot spot for international concern continues to be North Korea.

Sajjan tells Kiss FM Canada is working closely with the US and other allies to make sure North Korea doesn’t further expand its nuclear missile program.

“We are very concerned with the actions North Korea has taken especially with their continued aggressive action i developing further technology for the missiles they’ve been launching. We are watching that very closely.”

Sajjan says Canada’s would prefer having constructive dialogue on the concerns, but he says that has obviously not worked in the past.
