Lumby Mayor Kevin Acton has his tent, sleeping bag and bottled water ready.
Acton will be camping out beside Highway 6 at the entrance to Lumby from this evening until Sunday evening.
It’s to raise awareness and raise money for the less fortunate.
It’s not necessarily the homeless who are in trouble
“There’s a lot of situations where really, really hard working people hit some hard times. There’s injuries and major losses in families that can set people back.”
Acton won’t be eating, just drinking water to highlight the situation some people are in.
“Kids living in poverty more than just a handful and there’s people that are just one or two pay cheques away from losing everything they have. So, I thought other people really need to know all this stuff, so I started camping on the side of the road.”
He’ll be taking donations for the White Valley Community Resources Centre Legacy Fund.
“As far as raising awareness, has it made a difference in Lumby? Absolutely. The thrift store, the food bank, the services offered through the White Valley Community Resource Centre, people have been a lot more engaged.
The Bank of Nova Scotia has put boots around the village, asking people to skip lunch and donate what they would pay for lunch and the bank will match the total raised.
Acton will be in the pullout just at the west entrance to Lumby and welcoming anyone who wants to donate and talk.
