Smoking Continues In Park Despite Ban

The extreme fire danger has some residents wondering if Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park should be closed.

Harold Sellers, president of the Friends of Kalamalka Park Society says that decision is up to the BC Wildfire Service in conjunction with BC Parks.

He’s not sure if it’s necessary at this point.

“That would be pretty drastic. I would say our membership is probably split on it. Myself personally, I think we try to educate the pubic and try encourage people to exercise as much caution and common sense as they can,” Sellers tells Kiss FM.

The society is reminding park users that as part of the campfire ban, smoking is also banned in all provincial parks.

Sellers says despite that, their volunteers found 101 cigarette butts on park trails between the Twin Bays parking lot and the point this week, just ten days after the trails had been cleared.

“That would indicate there are a lot of people walking the trails and smoking,” says Sellers.
