Evacuation Order Rescinded In Okanagan Centre

The remaining residents evacuated from the Okanagan Centre fire zone are allowed back home

The evacuation order for 58 properties on Nighthawk, Long and Tyndall Roads was lifted at 8 o’clock this morning.

Lake Country Fire Chief Steve Windsor says firefighters have 100 per cent containment.

“Doesn’t mean the fire is out. We came across a lot of hot spots last night and I suspect we will for the next couple of weeks. But we have that big perimeter guard all the way around it.”

He says most of the hot spots are in the middle of areas that have been burnt off.

“They’re not the concern that we had prior to getting that perimeter really established and put in place. We’re feeling good about that. Everybody in those areas are still on alert.”

Tree removal is also underway.

“The forest service has been providing us a danger tree assessment and danger tree fallers. They’ve been going around through the areas where they can, tagging them and the fallers have been coming in behind them and taking them down.”

It’s not clear how many trees need to be removed, but the fire covered 55 hectares.

Chief Windsor says parks and trails in the fire zone remain closed.

“Jack Seaton Park which burnt over is still totally closed and will be for the foreseeable future. We’re requesting that people stay out of the Nighthawk area. There will be flaggers there to ensure it’s local residents only.

Long and Tyndall are also open only to residents.

The District of Lake Country has arranged a town hall meeting tomorrow night for residents who are returning home.

It will be held at 7 pm at Thursday at Winfield Memorial Hall 10130 Bottom Wood Lake Road.

As for the cause of the fire, the chief is leaving it to the RCMP and forest service to determine.

“They say they’re still actively doing work behind the scenes trying to, probably likely to eliminate things versus what could have caused this.”

He suspects it will be awhile yet before a definitive answer is.
