Major Overhaul For Club Lot

The Vernon Curling Rink’s parking lot is getting a $439,000 upgrade.

Work on the lot started Monday and is expected to continue until August 23, with the site closed to all traffic over that period.

“The curling rink parking lot is badly deteriorated and in need of replacement,” says a City release.

The project includes replacing the blacktop surface and substrate, new sidewalks on the north end of the Recreation Centre, replacing the 1966 water main that runs through the parking lot, updating a fire hydrant, new storm and sewer lines, new catch basins, and a new garbage bin enclosure.

The parking stall layout will also be realigned and re-painted to increase parking capacity.

The cost, including consultation fees and contingencies, is estimated at $439,109.

“The parking lot upgrades were approved by Vernon Council as part of the 2017 budget. The City of Vernon owns the parking lot but not the curling club,” says City spokesperson Tanya Laing Gahr.

The curling rink is being used as group lodging for wildfire evacuees from the Cariboo. Alternate parking has been designated for these evacuees by the City.
