Vernon Homeless Estimated at 75
The latest homeless count in the Vernon area has determined there are at least 75 people with no place to call home.
Their count determined there were 21 people sleeping outside, Howard House as well as Gateway by were basically full, with over a dozen on the men’s floor and 11 of 12 spaces occupied on the women’s floor.
A half a dozen were sleeping on extreme weather beds still open in the Gateway basement.
Kelly Fehr, from the John Howard Society told KISS-FM News, that number is partially reflective by the lack of affordable housing in the area.
He mentioned that some of the problem could be addressed by the private sector and the Government stepping up to the plate somewhat with regards to the lack of affordable housing.
They are appreciative of BC Housing for their continued support of local agencies dealing with this issue and applaud their positive response over the past 2 years.
Their plan is to continue as they do. “Their Outreach Team goes out once a week to connect with campers that are out there, along with individuals who are living rough.”
“Also to provide the support from the referrals that they can to the people who are willing or able to receive them.”
