$2.00 a litre gas arrives in B.C.

Gas prices have hit a significant milestone in B.C. with some stations in Metro Vancouver up to $2.00 a litre for regular unleaded.

Vernon stations are all selling for either $1.74 or a $1.78 a litre, an increase of 24 cents or more this week, while Kelowna stations are averaging $176.9. The figures are according to gasbuddy.com.

Petroleum analysts have said the Russian invasion of Ukraine, along with rising transportation and delivery costs, are factors in the recent hikes.

Premier John Horgan was asked about the high prices by the media Thursday, and he offered no hope of provincial help, in fact, saying the one cent a litre increase to the carbon tax will go ahead as planned on April 1.

“That’s part of a federal mandate, and I’m not passing the buck when I say that. The federal government has a climate action plan, as does British Columbia, and pricing carbon is a key component of that,” Horgan said.

Horgan said gas taxes go to road building, transit, and upgrading infrastructure.

Gas Buddy reported the cheapest gas in B.C. as of 10 a.m. March 4 was in Castlegar at $1.55.9.

The average price in Canada is $170.1 a litre, up 13.8 cents in the last week.
