It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Otto Mulzet, who died peacefully at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, on April 2nd, at the age of 81.
Otto was born in the small farming town of Bashaw, Alberta, the eighth of 15 children. He remained in Alberta until 1961 when he moved to Vernon, married, and raised his first two children.
Farming was Otto’s passion and he enjoyed his hobby farm in the Coldstream where he raised cattle, horses and chickens. He also loved his vehicles and Sunday drives.
Otto liked to keep busy and had a strong work ethic that he passed along to his four children. Throughout the years, Otto worked for the Coldstream Ranch, Cougar Equipment, and the Vernon Irrigation District. In 1975, Otto embarked on his own as a self-employed mechanic of “Otto’s Autos.” He worked hard to satisfy his clients, even taking out an old motor and replacing it with a new one in a single night. As Otto liked to say, “I forgot more about fixing vehicles than you’ll ever know!” Otto also provided custom haying and farm work to Coldstream residents, but most enjoyed using his big, blue, Ford tractor to plow snow off the neighbours’ driveways.
Otto liked to tease – always trying to get a laugh. He didn’t tolerate everyone but was very loyal to his friends. His gruff exterior could not always hide his kind heart and he had a special affection for all things small – especially his little dogs and his beloved granddaughters.
Otto will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his children Kelly Mulzet, Shelley Cornell (Michael), and their mother Erica, his twin boys, Colton Furgeson Mulzet and Dillon Furgeson Mulzet, and their mother Holly, as well as his granddaughters, Ava Cornell and Grace Cornell. Otto will also be remembered by his siblings Angie (Dennis), Norbert (Sophie), Erma (Alec), Theresa (Roger), Peter, John and James (Marilyn), his brothers-in-law, Bill and John, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Otto was predeceased by his parents, Lydia and Frank, seven siblings: Bertha, Christine (Frank), Adolph (Lil), Hedy, Joseph, Freda, Paul, and his sister-in-law, Bev.
Otto will be buried near his long-time neighbour, Arnold, at the Coldstream cemetery, during a small, graveside service to occur this summer.
